The Crossover Grip helps the child who wraps their thumb over the pencil. This gripper is similar to the standard Pencil Grip, but has a shield over the thumb and index finger.

The Pencil Grip has a large area at the top of the grip. Prior to the creation of the gripper, therapists commonly gave their students a pencil with a small gripper and a wadded paper towel above the gripper. The towel was added to support the index finger -- helpful for children who hyper-extend the finger at the first knuckle. The educational therapist who designed The Pencil Grip decided it was time to do away with the paper towel.
