Sample Lessons

Introduce the bird to be drawn -- the swan or the Great Blue Heron. You may want to use an encyclopedia or online resources to familiarize yourself with characteristics of the bird. Keep the introduction short, a minute or two. More information may be shared during or after the lesson.

Swan
The swan is a large bird with a huge wingspan (depending on the species, up to eight feet). It eats water plants, using it's long neck to reach underwater for the roots. Read a story, such as The Ugly Duckling.

Great Blue Heron
This lesson is part of a unit study on oceans. The long-legged heron wades in the muddy, shallow water of the tidelands, watching for a fish to spear with it's sharp bill. The yellow note at the bottom of the page asks, "Do animals live in mud?" The answer is, "Yes, worms, insect larvae, clams and soft-shelled crabs thrive in muddy tidelands".
